Description
Two Green Points is a painting by Wassily Kandinsky from 1935: on a pale, bluish-white ground, tall coloured panels, rounded forms and thin lines stand side by side, and at the top of a pale turquoise panel sit two small green and violet circles. Two Green Points – Wassily Kandinsky
What can be seen in the painting?
The ground is pale and bluish white, and a row of upright panels stands across it. Near the upper left corner is a small black square, and beside it rises a tall black band. In front of it lies a turquoise panel with a red rounded form, orange-red wavy tongues winding out beneath it and a narrow pale bar lower down. Next come a pale yellow band and a light green strip that turns into a dark green block reaching almost to the bottom edge. In the middle, under a green fan-shaped arc, rounded forms in red, orange, pale blue and beige are stacked, some with finger-like extensions; below them hang small brick-coloured shapes and a tiny diamond of black, white and brown triangles. At the top of a pale turquoise panel to their right sit two small circles side by side, each green above and violet below. From there a dark brown beam runs right to a golden yellow half circle at the top edge; above the beam, left of the half circle, sit small grey and brown squares. Beneath the beam three thin arcs in red, grey and ochre curve over three upright lines in ochre and brown. On the right a grey panel carries a long black line winding downwards in loose loops, with a pale lilac strip and a tall whitish strip beside it.
Panels, curves and accents
The composition works like a row of standing panels. The narrow upright bands give it an even pulse, and the pale ground between them leaves room to breathe. The dense cluster on the left and in the middle is balanced by the more open right half, where a single black line winds down the grey panel. Horizontals are rare: the dark beam at the top is almost the only one and ties the two halves together. The colours are soft and chalky, turquoise, lilac, sand and pale green, and only a few strong accents, the red form, the golden half circle and the two green circles, catch the eye and lead it across the canvas. On the wall it looks calm and orderly, and up close full of small details.

Kandinsky painted it in 1935. The original is 115 cm high and 162.5 cm wide and belongs to the Musée National d’Art Moderne (inv. no. AM 1976-859). How is our hand-painted version made?
The painter works from a high-resolution reference and builds the painting up in layers, with brush and oil paint. First the arrangement of the main forms is sketched in thin paint, then the colours go on layer by layer, from the large areas down to the smallest details. The edges of the forms and the transitions between colours are compared with the reference until the proportions match. Since every reproduction is made individually, no two copies match down to the last detail; the subject, the proportions and the colours do. You can see the difference between a print and a hand-painted canvas as soon as you look at the work from the side: the brushstrokes form a slight relief that shows in raking light and can be felt with the fingertips. Which interior suits it?
The painting is light in tone, so it suits a modern or minimalist room with white or light grey walls best, where it becomes the one strong accent. It also works in a study; next to a very busy wallpaper it would be lost. Hang it with its centre at about eye level, roughly 150 cm from the floor; above a sofa or sideboard, leave a gap of 20 to 30 cm. In a bedroom a medium size above the bed works well, and in a hallway or on a narrow wall a smaller size hung at eye level.
