Motor – abstract painting – colour thrown into a corner
Abstract painting leans a rider deep into a bend and assembles him almost entirely out of thick, clashing loads of colour: painting on canvas in which the figure is not drawn at all but arrives out of the paint as you back away from it.
Technique and texture
The work was made with a blade in short chopped loads that overlap like scales. The colours were not mixed on the palette but set down beside each other, so the eye does the assembling. The wheel and the lower machine are dragged into smeared strokes that carry the speed, while the ground behind is smooth and thinly laid.
The motif
The rider is caught from the side, tipped so low that the knee comes near the road. Helmet and shoulders are built from red, white and blue planes, the back and sleeve from pale blues and greys. The front wheel is a dense wreath of coloured dots, and behind the machine a grey trail drags away like smoke or thrown water. The lower edge passes into dark grey and sets the whole thing on the ground.
Setting and placement
A square format carrying colour this loud needs a wall that can take it unaided, which rules out a crowded one. Grey or white behind it and some clear space around it are what let the texture read as texture rather than as noise — a living room, a workroom, a garage.
