Dictatorship – Diego Rivera
Dictatorship is a 1936 painting by Diego Rivera, held by the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City: a mockery of a dictator in the middle of a colourful Mexican carnival. We paint our hand-painted study of Dictatorship to order on canvas, in oil or acrylic, in 8 sizes from 70 × 130 cm to 211 × 389 cm or in a custom size. Before Dictatorship is dispatched, we send you a photo of the finished painting.
What does Dictatorship show?
In Dictatorship a man with a moustache, a bowler hat and a dark suit grins broadly in the centre, a flag waves behind him, and below him masked figures crowd together in big sombreros, with masks, rifles and guitars in warm yellow, green and red. With exaggerated carnival faces Rivera showed how power wears a mask, which is why Dictatorship feels lively, loud and satirical.
How is our hand-painted study of Dictatorship made?
Our painters paint the study of Dictatorship by hand, with brushstrokes of different thickness, separately for every order. We paint in oil or acrylic, depending on the subject and the size, so the surface of Dictatorship has a real paint texture that a print does not have. When Dictatorship is finished, we photograph it and send you the photo for approval.
Which size of Dictatorship suits your room?
For the wall above a sofa or a sideboard choose Dictatorship in 80 × 150 cm, and for a bedroom, hallway or work corner 70 × 130 cm. Dictatorship is available in 70 × 130 cm, 80 × 150 cm, 90 × 170 cm, 100 × 180 cm, 130 × 240 cm, 160 × 300 cm, 180 × 330 cm and 211 × 389 cm. The 211 × 389 cm size of Dictatorship is the size of the original. A simple rule for Dictatorship: it should be about two thirds as wide as the furniture below it, with its centre about 150 cm from the floor.
How does Dictatorship arrive, and when?
We ship Dictatorship rolled in a sturdy tube, stretched on 2.5 cm deep wooden stretcher bars, or framed – you choose when you order. Stretching and framing of Dictatorship are done in our workshop in Slovenia. When a size of Dictatorship is in stock, it reaches you within 6 working days; a study of Dictatorship painted to order reaches you in 15 to 45 days.
