No. 10 – Mark Rothko
No. 10 is a painting by Mark Rothko from 1950: on a blue-grey ground come a narrow light band at the top, a large ochre-yellow field and a pale cream field below. What does No. 10 show?
In No. 10 the yellow glows like warm light, and the cool blue around it sets it off even more; the edges of the fields are soft and slightly blurred, so the colours breathe. It comes from the year Rothko found his mature style of floating rectangles, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York bought it as early as 1952. No. 10 is bright and calm at the same time.
