What does Rust, Blacks on Plum show?

In Rust, Blacks on Plum a narrow rust-red band lies at the top, a large deep black field below it and a lower dark, greenish-black field at the bottom, all surrounded by a lighter plum-violet border. In the 1960s Rothko used ever darker tones, which is why Rust, Blacks on Plum feels serious, quiet and collected.
