Untitled – Mark Rothko
Untitled is a 1959 abstract painting by Mark Rothko: a red and a dark violet field on a glowing yellow ground. What does Untitled show?
Untitled shows a large red rectangle at the top, a dark violet one below and a thin white band between them, all on a warm yellow ground with soft, smudged edges. Rothko wanted the viewer to stand close and be wrapped in colour, which is why Untitled feels strong, warm and almost meditative in a room.
