Monet spent the last years of his life in Giverny. Next to his residence, he built a garden with a pond and a Japanese-style arched bridge. In 1900, he exhibited a series of ten canvases with the motif of this garden with a pond, presenting the same subject under different lighting conditions.
The simple design of this oil on canvas, with a Japanese bridge in the foreground, is repeated in several other Monet paintings. The fresh green shades of the growth in the garden conjure up the feeling of an early summer day.

“As a painter I have done what I could, and that seems to me enough. I do not wish to be compared to the great masters of the past, and my painting belongs to criticism; that is sufficient.”
