Maison Maria with a View of Château Noir – a path through the pines

Maison Maria is a house on the path leading up to the Château Noir estate east of Aix-en-Provence. Cézanne walked this path to work and painted it as he saw it every day: a pink-ochre building among the pines under a strong blue sky. Our hand-painted reproduction on canvas brings this sunlit subject into your home, painted in oil on canvas.

The path he walked every day

Since Château Noir was not for sale to him, Cézanne rented a room there to store his painting equipment and climbed up to it on foot each day. Maison Maria stands beside that path. The subject was therefore not chosen for its picturesqueness but because the painter had it before his eyes daily – which with Cézanne is almost the rule.

A blue only he could manage

The sky on this canvas is painted in several different blues laid side by side, and that is exactly why it reads so intensely. Cézanne did not mix his colour to an even tone; he left the transitions visible, which forces the eye to assemble the colour for itself.

What you see on the canvas

On the left rises the pink building with its orange roofs, on the right the path drops away among the trees, and a rocky ridge is suggested in the background. The original is painted in oil on canvas, by the collection’s record measures 79 × 64 cm and was made in the mid-1890s; it is held by the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth.
