Still Life with Bouquet and Fan is an oil painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, made in 1871. The original measures 59.0 cm x 74.0 cm, is recorded under inventory number 51.7 and is held by the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. Paper, glaze, silk and a printed sheet

On a fringed cloth lies a bouquet of roses wrapped in white paper that opens towards the viewer. To the right stands a blue-and-white vase of dried stems, and beside it leans an opened Japanese fan with a yellow ground and red blossoms. Behind it all, on a brownish wall, hangs a framed print of a group of figures, and two red books are stacked at the lower right.

Why hand-painted, not a print

Our version is not a print. The objects are not chosen for their symbolism but for what they are: paper takes the light differently from glazed ceramic, the fan brings a flat plane of colour, the books two quiet horizontals. A hand-made version can give each material its own surface; printing puts them all on the same sheet and the difference between them goes.

In the room

There are many separate objects on the canvas – the fan, a print, two books, the vase, the bouquet wrapped in paper – and below a certain threshold they stop reading as things and become patches of colour. That is why, with this subject, the minimum size matters more than the maximum: we suggest at least 80 x 100 cm, even if the wall is small. For a large wall in a living or dining room we suggest 120 x 150 cm, where the patterns on the fan separate as well, with 100 x 120 cm as the step between. The subject is quiet and domestic and stands well where people sit for a while – above a chest of drawers, beside the dining table, or in a study.

What you receive

We paint the canvas to order, by hand and for you alone, so every copy is made on its own; the canvas is usually painted and dried within three to four weeks. If you prefer, we will paint it in a size that is not on the list. Before despatch we send you a photograph of the finished canvas for your approval, and only then does the painting go out.
