The young nude sits in profile on the bank, her hands clasped over one knee and her head bent forward. Long red-gold hair falls across her shoulder and back. A white cloth is laid over her lap, and folded linen lies to her right. The background is a mesh of blue, green and brown strokes suggesting the scrub along the water.
The painting dates from 1892. Renoir painted the young-bather motif often in these years; what occupied him was how light catches on skin and how the body settles among the coloured strokes of its surroundings. The contours are soft, and the passage between warm flesh and cool green is carried through without a hard edge.
The original measures 64.8 cm x 81.3 cm and is oil on canvas. It is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York under inventory number 1975.1.199.
