Crucifixion – Salvador Dalí
Crucifixion (Corpus Hypercubus) is a painting by Salvador Dalí from 1954: Christ floating in front of a cross made of eight cubes, watched by Gala from a chessboard floor. We paint our hand-painted study of Crucifixion to order on canvas, in oil or acrylic, in 7 sizes from 40 × 60 cm to 120 × 190 cm or in a custom size. Before Crucifixion is dispatched, we send you a photo of the finished painting.
What does Crucifixion show?
In Crucifixion Christ hangs in the air in front of a golden cross built from eight cubes, the unfolded form of a four-dimensional hypercube, with no nails, no crown of thorns and no wounds; below him Dalí’s wife Gala, in a rich robe as Mary Magdalene, looks up from a black-and-white chessboard floor, and behind lies the bay of Port Lligat at night. Dalí joined faith with mathematics and the science of his time, so Crucifixion feels calm, timeless and almost weightless.
How is our hand-painted study of Crucifixion made?
Our painters paint the study of Crucifixion by hand, with brushstrokes of different thickness, separately for every order. We paint in oil or acrylic, depending on the subject and the size, so the surface of Crucifixion has a real paint texture that a print does not have. When Crucifixion is finished, we photograph it and send you the photo for approval.
Which size of Crucifixion suits your room?
For the wall above a sofa or a sideboard choose Crucifixion in 70 × 110 cm, and for a bedroom, hallway or work corner 40 × 60 cm. Crucifixion is available in 40 × 60 cm, 50 × 80 cm, 60 × 90 cm, 70 × 110 cm, 80 × 120 cm, 90 × 140 cm and 120 × 190 cm. A simple rule for Crucifixion: it should be about two thirds as wide as the furniture below it, with its centre about 150 cm from the floor.
How does Crucifixion arrive, and when?
We ship Crucifixion rolled in a sturdy tube, stretched on 2.5 cm deep wooden stretcher bars, or framed – you choose when you order. Stretching and framing of Crucifixion are done in our workshop in Slovenia. When a size of Crucifixion is in stock, it reaches you within 6 working days; a study of Crucifixion painted to order reaches you in 15 to 45 days.
Frequently asked questions about Crucifixion
Is Crucifixion a print?
No. Every brushstroke of Crucifixion is painted by hand on canvas, so the paint visibly stands up from the surface.
Can I order Crucifixion in a size that is not listed?
Yes. We also paint Crucifixion in a custom size; enter the width and height you want when you order Crucifixion.
What is the cube cross in Crucifixion?
The cross in Crucifixion is the net of a hypercube, a cube in four dimensions unfolded into eight cubes; Dalí used it to show a reality beyond what we can see, which is why the painting is also called Corpus Hypercubus.
Is Crucifixion a good gift?
Crucifixion is a gift for a lover of Dalí, religious art or mathematics. If you are unsure which size of Crucifixion to choose, give a gift voucher.
