One Second Before Awakening – Salvador Dalí
One Second Before Awakening from a Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee Around a Pomegranate is a painting by Salvador Dalí from 1944: the sleeping Gala floats above the sea, and two tigers and a rifle with a bayonet leap out of a pomegranate. We paint our hand-painted study of One Second Before Awakening to order on canvas, in oil or acrylic, in 8 sizes from 41 × 51 cm to 150 × 190 cm or in a custom size. Before One Second Before Awakening is dispatched, we send you a photo of the finished painting.
What does One Second Before Awakening show?
In One Second Before Awakening the naked Gala sleeps on a flat rock above a calm sea; above her a fish bursts from a split pomegranate, two tigers lunge out of its mouth, and in front of them flies a rifle with a bayonet about to touch Gala’s arm, while in the background an elephant carrying an obelisk walks across the sea on long, thin legs. The little bee buzzing around a pomegranate below caused the whole dream: Dalí wanted to show how a sound or a touch from the real world becomes the sting of a bayonet in the moment before waking.
How is our hand-painted study of One Second Before Awakening made?
Our painters paint the study of One Second Before Awakening by hand, with brushstrokes of different thickness, separately for every order. We paint in oil or acrylic, depending on the subject and the size, so the surface of One Second Before Awakening has a real paint texture that a print does not have. The first photograph shows our finished study of One Second Before Awakening in a wide gold frame on the easel, the second and third photographs show it from both sides, the fourth photograph shows the frame profile and the elephant up close, and the fifth photograph shows the hand-painted tiger and bayonet up close, where the canvas weave is visible. When One Second Before Awakening is finished, we photograph it and send you the photo for approval.
