View – a face looking straight back
Painting on canvas squares a face to the viewer and builds it from dark and light planes with a red scarf around head and neck — decorative painting only in the loosest sense, because this one looks back at the room.
Technique and texture
The face is made of broad, softly fused planes with no outline anywhere — light and dark meet each other directly, with no tone in between. The scarf is laid thick and in one stroke per fold, so the individual folds stand up as raised edges. The ground was scraped with a blade and then flooded, and the drips were allowed to run on their own.
The motif
The gaze goes straight out and nothing in the pose suggests movement — the face is still, the lips closed, the eyes open and level. Lower down the scarf opens and uncovers the neck, and that is the only lean in the whole composition. The ground gives no space at all: no wall, no horizon, only texture with scratches and vertical drips running from the top edge.
Setting and placement
A portrait that meets the eye needs a place where people stop rather than pass, so a corridor wall is the wrong home for it. Nothing in the colour asks for attention, which is why a look can stay on the face.
