What does New York, New Haven and Hartford show?
In New York, New Haven and Hartford an empty railway track runs along the bottom, a dark green slope with scattered trees rises above it, and two houses, one grey and one bluish with a red roof, stand at the top under a pale sky. Hopper named the painting after the railroad that ran through New England and caught the view from the train of quiet places beside the line, which is why it feels lonely, calm and thoughtful.
