Description

The video on this page (0:25) first shows the drawing in dark brushstrokes on the white canvas – the boat, the sail and the figures – and then the finished hand-painted painting Ground Swell in a dark silvery frame on a white wall in a room, next to another painting.
Ground Swell – Edward Hopper
Ground Swell is a painting by Edward Hopper from 1939: a sailing boat with young sailors passes a buoy on a turquoise sea, under a bright sky streaked with clouds. We paint our hand-painted study of Ground Swell to order on canvas, in oil or acrylic, in 9 sizes from 40 × 55 cm to 120 × 160 cm or in a custom size. Before Ground Swell is dispatched, we send you a photo of the finished painting.
What does Ground Swell show?
In Ground Swell the wind fills the white sail, the young men on deck sunbathe and look towards a dark bell buoy rocking on the swell; the sky is high, the sea bright and lively. Hopper spent his summers on Cape Cod and painted the light by the sea, yet beneath the calm scene a touch of tension always remains. The original Ground Swell is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
How is our hand-painted study of Ground Swell made?
Our painters paint the study of Ground Swell by hand, with brushstrokes of different thickness, separately for every order. We paint in oil or acrylic, depending on the subject and the size, so the surface of Ground Swell has a real paint texture that a print does not have. The first photograph shows our finished study of Ground Swell hanging framed on the wall of a bright hallway by a staircase, and the second shows the frame and colours closer up. When Ground Swell is finished, we photograph it and send you the photo for approval.
Which size of Ground Swell suits your room?
For the wall above a sofa or a sideboard choose Ground Swell in 80 × 110 cm, and for a bedroom, hallway or work corner 40 × 55 cm. Ground Swell is available in 40 × 55 cm, 50 × 70 cm, 60 × 80 cm, 70 × 100 cm, 80 × 110 cm, 92 × 127 cm, 100 × 140 cm, 110 × 150 cm and 120 × 160 cm. A simple rule for Ground Swell: it should be about two thirds as wide as the furniture below it, with its centre about 150 cm from the floor.
How does Ground Swell arrive, and when?
We ship Ground Swell rolled in a sturdy tube, stretched on 2.5 cm deep wooden stretcher bars, or framed – you choose when you order. Stretching and framing of Ground Swell are done in our workshop in Slovenia. When a size of Ground Swell is in stock, it reaches you within 6 working days; a study of Ground Swell painted to order reaches you in 15 to 45 days.
Frequently asked questions about Ground Swell
Is Ground Swell a print?
No. Every brushstroke of Ground Swell is painted by hand on canvas, so the paint visibly stands up from the surface.
Can I order Ground Swell in a size that is not listed?
Yes. We also paint Ground Swell in a custom size; enter the width and height you want when you order Ground Swell.
What is the buoy in the painting?
The dark object in the water is a bell buoy, which warns ships of shallow water. In Ground Swell it is like a quiet warning in the middle of a carefree summer day.
Is Ground Swell a good gift?
Ground Swell is a gift for a lover of the sea and sailing, of Hopper or of bright, summery rooms. If you are unsure which size of Ground Swell to choose, give a gift voucher.
