Description
Egon Schiele – Reclining Woman
Egon Schiele – Reclining Woman, 1917
This hand-painted Egon Schiele painting, Reclining Woman, is an oil reproduction of a work from 1917. The original is held at the Leopold Museum in Vienna.
The scene and the model
A woman reclines with her legs spread and her arms folded behind her head. Schiele’s wife Edith is presumed to have modelled for the work, which is signed and dated lower right “EGON SCHIELE 1917”.
The composition
The posture of the widespread legs is mirrored by the arms folded behind the head, structuring the picture into a balanced, almost symmetrical whole.
The original’s medium and format
The original is oil on canvas, measuring 96 × 171 cm (inv. 626). It was shown at the 49th Vienna Secession exhibition in spring 1918, which brought Schiele his first major financial success.
Provenance and restitution
Between 1939 and 1948 — that is, across the Nazi era — the painting was with the Vienna art historian Bruno Grimschitz. In 1948 it was restituted to Frederik Knize in New York and later sold; it is now held at the Leopold Museum in Vienna.
