Description
Egon Schiele – Young Mother
Egon Schiele – Young Mother, 1914
This hand-painted Egon Schiele painting, Young Mother, is an oil reproduction of a work from 1914. The original is held at the Wien Museum in Vienna.
The scene
A young mother in dark clothing draws a child to herself; warm skin tones stand out against the dark ground, and the mood is quiet and inward.
What restoration revealed
X-ray and infrared examination during the 2020 restoration showed that Schiele had originally sketched two children beside the mother and later painted one out; the hidden figure became known as “the disappearing child” (das verschwundene Kind). It is also one of the few Schiele paintings never varnished, so it retains its original colour and surface.
The original’s medium and format
The original is painted in mixed media on canvas (the museum’s own term is “Mischtechnik”), measuring 100 × 120 cm (inv. 243484).
Owned by the Wien Museum
The picture has been at the Wien Museum since 1985. It had two co-owners; one bequeathed his half to the City of Vienna, and the City purchased the remaining half in 2007, so the museum now owns it outright.
