Blooming Meadow – Gustav Klimt

What is shown?

The whole square belongs to the meadow and the trees. In the lower half the grass is covered with tiny dots of flowers – white, yellow, red, violet and blue – so dense that the eye reads them not as single blossoms but as a shimmering carpet. Low in the middle of the foreground sits a large, round, dark bush, the heaviest shape in the painting.

Behind it the meadow rises gently towards a row of fruit trees with round, dark green crowns, their thin trunks standing on the light grass. Only at the very top does a narrow strip of pale sky appear. There are no people, no paths and no houses: just the flowering field, the trees and the light of a summer day.

Why a square landscape?

Klimt painted almost all of his landscapes on square canvases, and Blooming Meadow is one of them. He painted these landscapes on his summer stays in the countryside. The square format has no strong direction: the eye does not race towards a distant horizon, it wanders slowly over the surface, from flower to flower.

Klimt pushed the horizon right up to the top edge, so the sky shrinks to a sliver and the meadow fills almost everything. That is why the painting feels close and calm, as if you were standing in the grass yourself. The flowers are not drawn one by one; they are small dabs of colour that only blend in the eye from a little distance.

What does the painting mean?

Blooming Meadow tells no story and hides no symbol. Its subject is the simple pleasure of a summer field in flower. Many people love it precisely for that: after the gold, the myths and the portraits, Klimt here looks at nature with patience and paints it as a pattern of light and colour.

The round bush and the round tree crowns repeat each other, and the small dots of the flowers answer the larger round shapes. This quiet rhythm of circles is what holds the painting together. It is a landscape to live with every day, restful rather than dramatic, and it changes with the light in the room.

The story of the painting

Blooming Meadow is dated to about 1908; no exact year is known. It is painted in oil on canvas and measures 110 x 110 cm, like several of Klimt’s square landscapes. According to the Wikimedia Commons record of the painting, which cites Sotheby’s, it was in the collection of Leonard A. Lauder in 2007.

Today the painting is in a private collection, so it does not hang in a public museum. Its data are gathered in its Wikidata entry, and there is more about the painter’s life on Wikipedia.

Blooming Meadow among Klimt’s landscapes

We paint several of Klimt’s square summer landscapes, and each has its own character. The closest relative is Poppy Field: also a meadow with trees, but dominated by red poppies. The Park is almost all treetops, a dense wall of green, while Blooming Meadow keeps the open field in front.

If you prefer a garden to a field, Flower Garden fills the square with large, colourful blossoms, and Farm Garden with Sunflowers brings tall sunflowers into the middle. Choose Blooming Meadow if you want the softest and airiest of them, with fine flower dots and calm green.

How is our hand-painted version made?

The painter first lays in the large areas – the green of the meadow, the dark bush, the tree crowns and the strip of sky – in thin layers of oil paint. Then the work turns patient: thousands of small dabs of white, yellow, red, violet and blue are set into the grass with fine brushes, just as Klimt built his meadow from dots.

The tree crowns get their own texture of short strokes, so they look round and full, and the light between the trunks is added last. Nothing is printed: every flower dot is a real brushstroke you can see and feel. There is no gold in this painting, so the effect comes from colour and texture alone.

Every painting is a hand-painted copy made for your order, so no two are ever exactly the same. That is what separates it from a printed oil painting reproduction, where the dots would be flat ink instead of real paint.

Which size for which wall?

Short answer: 90 x 90 cm for most walls, 70 x 70 or 80 x 80 cm for a smaller wall, and 110 x 110 cm if you want the size of the original. There are eight square sizes: 60 x 60, 70 x 70, 80 x 80, 90 x 90, 100 x 100, 110 x 110, 120 x 120 and 150 x 150 cm.

A square painting needs a little air around it. As a painting for the living room it works well above a sofa, but its calm green also suits a bedroom, a hallway or a study, and a meadow in flower is welcome in a kitchen or dining room too. On a large, bright wall, 150 x 150 cm becomes a window onto summer. Choose a size that takes up about two thirds of the width of the furniture below.

Hang it with the centre about 150 cm above the floor, 20 to 30 cm above a sofa or sideboard.

Custom size, stretcher and frame

If you need Blooming Meadow in a size that is not on the list, we paint it to measure. Send us the width and height and we will quote a price and a lead time. Every Klimt reproduction we make is stretched over a wooden stretcher and ready to hang.

For the moulding, use our 3D application: it shows every one of our frame profiles on this subject, so you can compare gold, silver, black, white and natural wood before deciding – the application is for choosing the frame only. If you would like to see how the painting will look on your own wall, that is our separate room placement service. A natural wood or white frame keeps the meadow light, while a thin gold frame warms the greens.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Blooming Meadow by Klimt today?

Blooming Meadow is in a private collection and is not part of a public museum. According to the Wikimedia Commons record, which cites Sotheby’s, it belonged to Leonard A. Lauder in 2007. Because it is privately owned, a hand-painted version is the practical way to have this meadow on your own wall, in the size that suits your room.

When did Klimt paint Blooming Meadow?

Klimt painted Blooming Meadow around 1908; no exact year is recorded, so it is dated “about 1908”. It belongs to the square landscapes he painted on his summer stays in the countryside. These are the same years as his golden period, yet this canvas has no gold at all: only greens, flower colours and light.

What does Blooming Meadow show?

It shows a summer meadow full of tiny white, yellow, red, violet and blue flowers, rising towards fruit trees with round, dark green crowns. A large round bush sits low in the middle of the foreground, and only a thin strip of pale sky remains at the top. There are no people and no buildings in the scene.

Is Blooming Meadow the same painting as Poppy Field?

No, they are two different paintings. Both are square meadow landscapes with trees, which is why they are often confused. In Poppy Field the red poppies dominate, while Blooming Meadow is a softer mix of many small flowers with a large dark bush in front. We paint both, and they also hang well together as a pair.

How big is the original Blooming Meadow?

The original measures 110 x 110 cm, oil on canvas. Our 110 x 110 cm size is therefore the size of the original, and we paint seven other square sizes from 60 x 60 to 150 x 150 cm. Any other size can be painted to measure; we tell you the price and the lead time before we start.

Is Blooming Meadow a good choice for a bedroom or a living room?

Yes. Blooming Meadow is a calm canvas painting with no strong contrasts, so it suits a bedroom as well as a living room, a dining room or a study. Its greens rest the eye, and the flower dots bring colour without noise. Give it soft daylight or warm lamplight, and it will look slightly different every hour of the day.

Why is Blooming Meadow painted in dots?

Klimt built the meadow from small dabs of colour instead of drawing single flowers. From a distance the dots blend into a shimmering field; close up you see each stroke. This way of painting gives the canvas its light, airy surface. On our copy every dot is set by hand with a fine brush, which is why the work takes time.

Which frame suits Blooming Meadow?

A light frame keeps Blooming Meadow airy: natural wood or white suits a modern room, while a thin gold frame warms the greens and fits a classic interior. In our 3D application you can try every frame profile on this subject before you decide. You can also order the painting unframed, stretched and ready to hang.

Is Blooming Meadow a good gift?

Yes. Blooming Meadow is a friendly gift for a new home, a birthday or a garden lover, because it brings colour without being loud. If you are unsure of the size, a voucher lets the recipient choose it later. Before dispatch we send you a photograph of the finished painting, so you know exactly what you are giving.
