No. 5 – Mark Rothko
No. 5 is a 1949 abstract painting by Mark Rothko: horizontal bands of black, olive grey, violet and dark blue stacked one above the other. We paint our hand-painted study of No. 5 to order on canvas, in oil or acrylic, in 15 sizes from 30 × 40 cm to 185 × 250 cm or in a custom size. What does No. 5 show?
In No. 5 a broad black band, an olive-grey band with a fine blue brush trace, a wide violet-blue band crossed by a dark line, another olive-grey band and a dark blue band at the bottom follow one another from top to bottom, all with soft, blurred edges. That year Rothko was moving from smaller patches of colour to large calm bands, which is why No. 5 feels cool, deep and mysterious.

We paint in oil or acrylic, depending on the subject and the size, so the surface of No. 5 has a real paint texture that a print does not have.
