No. 61 (Rust and Blue) – Mark Rothko
No. 61 (Rust and Blue) [Brown Blue, Brown on Blue] is a painting by Mark Rothko from 1953: on a blue-violet ground float a dark brown field at the top, a light blue band in the middle and a dark blue-grey field below. We paint our hand-painted study of No. 61 (Rust and Blue) to order on canvas, in oil or acrylic, in 14 sizes from 50 × 40 cm to 292 × 233 cm or in a custom size. Before No. 61 (Rust and Blue) is dispatched, we send you a photo of the finished painting.
What does No. 61 (Rust and Blue) show?
In No. 61 (Rust and Blue) the rusty brown above and the cool blue below meet at a light blue band that seems to glow. The edges are soft and slightly uneven, so the fields move gently the longer you look. The original is in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and No. 61 (Rust and Blue) is one of the Rothko paintings that make blue almost silent.
How is our hand-painted study of No. 61 (Rust and Blue) made?
Our painters paint the study of No. 61 (Rust and Blue) by hand, with brushstrokes of different thickness, separately for every order. We paint in oil or acrylic, depending on the subject and the size, so the surface of No. 61 (Rust and Blue) has a real paint texture that a print does not have. The photograph shows our finished study of No. 61 (Rust and Blue), not yet stretched, pinned up in our workshop, where all three layers of colour can be seen. When No. 61 (Rust and Blue) is finished, we photograph it and send you the photo for approval.
