In a restaurant, guests sit and look at the wall for half an hour or more. The painting they see is part of the menu: it tells them what kind of food to expect and affects how long they stay.

SvetSlik has sold hand-painted paintings on canvas since 2011, and for restaurants, cafés and hotels we put together the whole set of paintings to suit the space. Among commercial spaces, we have also fitted out a furniture showroom in Ljubljana. Our largest project of this kind was Hotel Kempinski Palace Portorož, for which we made more than 250 framed paintings in 2022 to the interior designer’s brief.
A subject that matches the cuisine
Sea, boats, fishermen, harbour towns.
Still lifes with fruit, bread and wine, country landscapes.
Vineyards, still lifes with wine, warm reds and gold.
Large abstract paintings in the room’s colours, as in photo 1.
City scenes, flowers, light abstract paintings.
Van Gogh’s Café Terrace at Night or Renoir’s Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette tell guests this is a good place to linger.

Sizes for a restaurant
A restaurant is bigger than a living room and guests sit further from the wall, so small paintings almost disappear. A large portrait format, as in photo 2, fills the wall from floor almost to ceiling.
- Main wall: one large painting, about 150 × 100 cm or more, or a multi-panel painting on stretcher bars.
- Wall beside the tables: a row of same-size paintings, for example 60 × 80 or 70 × 100 cm, at the same height.
- Bar: one painting behind or above the counter, about two thirds of its width.
Beside the tables, hang paintings a little lower than at home, because guests see them seated: bottom edge about 30 cm above the chair or bench back.

Frames and care
A restaurant is a demanding space: steam from the kitchen, grease in the air, frequent cleaning. Don’t hang a painting right next to an open kitchen or above the coffee machine.
Framed is the best choice, because the frame protects the edges. Stretched on 2.5 cm stretcher bars suits multi-panel paintings. Dust occasionally with a soft dry cloth.
Stretching and framing are done in our workshop in Slovenia, so the paintings arrive ready to hang.
