Paintings for hotels: how to choose art for rooms, lobby and corridors

A hotel needs different paintings from a home. Hundreds of guests see the same wall, the rooms have to match, and corridors must not look bare. SvetSlik has sold hand-painted paintings on canvas since 2011. For hotels, holiday apartments and restaurants we put together the whole set of paintings to suit the project.

This guide collects what hoteliers and interior designers most often ask before they order.

Our largest project: Hotel Kempinski Palace Portorož

In 2022 we made more than 250 framed paintings for the rooms and public areas of the Kempinski hotel in Portorož, Slovenia. A project like this is not picked from a catalogue.

The paintings were made to the interior designer’s brief: subjects, colours, sizes and frames were matched to the furnishings.

Guest rooms

The usual spot is the wall above the bed. The painting should be about two thirds to three quarters of the bed’s width, so around 100 to 120 cm above a double bed. In smaller rooms or above a desk, 50 × 70 or 60 × 80 cm is enough.

Matching, not identical

Rooms of the same type usually get paintings of the same size with different but matching subjects. Photos 3 and 4 show how this works: the same palette of blue, white and gold, the same size and frame, yet each room has its own painting. Guests feel a whole while no two rooms are identical.

Lobby and reception

This is where guests form their first impression, so it calls for one large painting or a multi-panel painting that commands the wall. On a wall 3 to 4 metres wide, a painting about 150 to 200 cm wide works well. For an even wider wall, choose a multi-panel painting on stretcher bars. Let the subject tell the hotel’s story: sea and coast for a seaside hotel, mountains for an Alpine one, a modern abstract for a city or business hotel.

Corridors and stairwells

Long corridors need rhythm: a row of same-size paintings hung at the same height and spacing. Guests walk past close up, so medium sizes of around 50 × 70 or 60 × 90 cm suit them.

Restaurant, bar and breakfast room

Larger sizes and warmer subjects, such as still lifes, landscapes or abstract paintings in the room’s colours. More in our article paintings for restaurants.

Rule of thumb for every space: hang the centre of the painting about 145 to 150 cm from the floor, and above furniture keep the bottom edge 20 to 30 cm above the headboard or sideboard.

Framed, stretched or rolled?

Every painting can be ordered three ways. Stretching and framing are done in our workshop in Slovenia, so the paintings arrive at the hotel ready to hang.

Framed
The most common choice for hotels. The frame protects the canvas edges from knocks during cleaning and luggage handling, and ties the painting to the furnishings. We choose frames together with the designer.
Stretched
The canvas is stretched over 2.5 cm wooden stretcher bars with painted edges. A modern look without a frame, good for multi-panel paintings.
Rolled
The cheapest shipping, useful if the hotel has its own framer.

Why hand-painted rather than prints

A canvas print costs less, but a guest standing next to the painting sees the difference: a hand-painted painting has brushstrokes, layers of paint and a depth a print lacks.

Each painting is one of a kind, so your hotel does not hang the same pictures as the hotel next door or your guest’s living room. For a hotel that sells an experience, that is part of the story.

How a hotel order works

  1. Floor plan and brief. Send us floor plans, wall photos or the designer’s brief. Tell us how many rooms and public areas you are fitting out, and in what style.
  2. An offer for your project. Every offer is made for the specific project: it depends on the number of paintings, sizes, subjects and frames.
  3. Matched subjects. Choose paintings from our range, reproductions of famous works, or entirely new subjects to the designer’s brief.
  4. Painted by hand. Different painters we work with paint them in oil or acrylic. You receive a photo of every painting before dispatch.
  5. Framing and delivery. We stretch and frame the paintings in our workshop in Slovenia and deliver them ready to hang.
