What does La Main show?
In La Main a small figure sits on a tall, ornate pedestal at the edge of a dark, empty plain, and from it a huge pale hand reaches sideways into the deep blue sky, far too big for the body it belongs to; tiny figures stand scattered across the plain below. The full title, La Main (Les remords de conscience), means The Hand (Remorse of Conscience), and Dalí made the oversized hand a picture of guilt that grows until it fills everything, which gives La Main its quiet, unsettling mood.
