What can be seen in the painting?
The ground is pale, cream and light yellow, with loose patches of colour laid over it. Along the upper edge runs a band of blue, violet, pink and yellow strokes, with a deep blue oval near the upper right corner and, near the top centre, a red patch below a black cloud-like form. At the left a broad dark blue curve arches like a ridge, and below it lies a yellow and orange patch. In the middle a large black oval with a pale rim lies on a pale slope. Above it and to the right, a row of thin dark vertical lines, like bare trunks or posts, stands in front of a pale green and white band. On the right a light road runs down towards the lower right, and along it stand two small pointed forms in red, yellow and white, like tents or sails. At the right edge is a brick-red patch, and higher up a small green and a violet patch. The lower half is filled with broad soft areas of yellow, pink, violet and pale blue, divided by a line of dark blue strokes that runs from the centre towards the lower right. At the lower left are small light blue zigzag strokes, and near the bottom, left of centre, an orange-red patch.
The diagonal of the slope
The composition is carried by one strong diagonal. The pale slope and the road lead from the upper left down towards the lower right, and the eye follows them from the dark blue ridge past the black oval to the two small pointed forms. The row of thin vertical lines crosses this movement and gives it a steady beat. The dark accents, the ridge, the black oval and the blue oval near the corner, are spread across the upper half, while the lower half stays open, light and soft. Warm yellow and pink meet cool blue and violet everywhere, so the whole surface feels bright and airy. On the wall it reads as a landscape at first glance and as a play of colour on a closer look.

Kandinsky painted it in 1913. The original is 88 cm high and 100 cm wide and belongs to the Hermitage Museum (inv. no. ГЭ-9098). How is our hand-painted version made?
The painter works from a high-resolution reference and builds the painting up in layers, with brush and oil paint. First the arrangement of the main forms is sketched in thin paint, then the colours go on layer by layer, from the large areas down to the smallest details. The edges of the forms and the transitions between colours are compared with the reference until the proportions match. An oil painting reproduction keeps its colours for many years, because oil does not fade the way a print does. Since every reproduction is made individually, no two copies match down to the last detail; the subject, the proportions and the colours do. Depending on the size, painting takes several days, and the paint then needs enough time to dry before the canvas is packed.

You can see the difference between a print and a hand-painted canvas as soon as you look at the work from the side: the brushstrokes form a slight relief that shows in raking light and can be felt with the fingertips. Whether it is a landscape, a figurative subject or an abstract painting, every shade is mixed on the palette and applied by hand. Before dispatch we photograph the finished work and send you the photograph to approve, so you know exactly what you will receive. Only when you are happy does it go on its way. Small irregularities in the brushwork are not flaws but the trace of the hand that painted it, and they are exactly what makes each copy one of a kind.
Which interior suits it?
The painting is light in tone, so it suits a modern or minimalist room with white or light grey walls best, where it becomes the one strong accent. It also works in a study; next to a very busy wallpaper it would be lost. Hang it with its centre at about eye level, roughly 150 cm from the floor; above a sofa or sideboard, leave a gap of 20 to 30 cm. In a bedroom a medium size above the bed works well, and in a hallway or on a narrow wall a smaller size hung at eye level.
