What can be seen in the painting?
A tall red chimney stands right of centre and rises straight from the middle of the scene to the top edge. Across the top runs a dark blue sky streaked with white, pink and light blue. Below it a pink hill crest curves from the centre to the right, carrying dark brown jagged forms like towers or rows of buildings. Left of the chimney lies a long dark building with a row of small red windows. At the upper left spreads a large area of coral red and pink, beside a pale blue slope with a yellow-green patch and two small orange-red spots. From the left a broad green hill climbs to the middle, carrying houses with red and pink roofs and pale walls and a slender pink tower with a pointed top. Below them stands an upright green and yellow form, like a tree. Right of the houses, bright blue, violet and pink glow in a dark zone. Beyond the chimney lie a yellow field and an orange-red patch. The lower left is pale yellow and turquoise; along the bottom sit a dark brown mound dotted with red and a smaller one dotted with blue. At the lower right a dark curved band sweeps across, above pink and white forms, with blue in the corner.
Chimney and hills
The composition is built on a strong vertical set against sweeping curves. The red chimney is the one straight, upright line, and everything else bends around it: the green hill, the pink crest, the dark band at the lower right. The eye starts at the houses on the left, climbs along the hill and meets the chimney, then follows it upward to the sky. Colours are laid on in broad, loose strokes and set side by side at full strength, green against pink, red against dark blue, yellow against violet. Even so, the landscape stays easy to read. On the wall it has a bright, energetic presence that fills a room with colour.

Kandinsky painted it in 1910. The original is 66 cm high and 82 cm wide and belongs to Schloss Weimar. On this page we give the width first, so the original reads 82 x 66 cm here. How is our hand-painted version made?
The painter works from a high-resolution reference and builds the painting up in layers, with brush and oil paint. First the arrangement of the main forms is sketched in thin paint, then the colours go on layer by layer, from the large areas down to the smallest details. The edges of the forms and the transitions between colours are compared with the reference until the proportions match. An oil painting reproduction keeps its colours for many years, because oil does not fade the way a print does. Since every reproduction is made individually, no two copies match down to the last detail; the subject, the proportions and the colours do. Depending on the size, painting takes several days, and the paint then needs enough time to dry before the canvas is packed.

You can see the difference between a print and a hand-painted canvas as soon as you look at the work from the side: the brushstrokes form a slight relief that shows in raking light and can be felt with the fingertips. Which interior suits it?
The warm, saturated colours make the painting glow, so it looks good in a living room or dining room, next to natural wood and quiet furniture. It works best on a light, neutral wall; next to other very colourful works on the same wall the colours would drown each other out. Hang it with its centre at about eye level, roughly 150 cm from the floor; above a sofa or sideboard, leave a gap of 20 to 30 cm. In a bedroom a medium size above the bed works well, and in a hallway or on a narrow wall a smaller size hung at eye level.

The 70 x 60 and 90 x 70 cm sizes suit the wall above a desk or a hallway, and 130 x 110 and 150 x 120 cm a large wall above a sofa or in an entrance hall. A simple rule helps: above a sofa or a sideboard the painting looks best at about two thirds of the furniture’s width, and on an empty wall choose a size that leaves at least 30 to 40 cm of free wall on each side.
