Tree of Life IIV – a crown of spirals and rings
Painting on canvas opens a broad tree across three panels, its branches ending not in points but curling into snails and spirals. Small rings sit along them with white, red and blue centres, sown thickly through the whole crown. The ground shifts from brick orange at the edges to a light olive green in the middle.
Technique & Texture
The base is painted wet into wet, so no visible seam is left between the orange and the green. The branches are drawn with a fine brush in dark brown and black, and each spiral is carried through in a single sweep. Every ring is built from three or four hoops laid inside one another, which gives a slight relief.
The Motif
The trunk is covered in dense dots and grows from the lower edge of the middle canvas. The crown spreads across all three fields and thickens towards the top edge. The outer panels carry larger, more widely spaced rings, the middle one the smallest and densest, which pulls the eye inward.
Styling & Placement
The warm earth palette suits walnut and oak, exposed brick and sand-coloured walls. A decorative painting whose order comes from the repetition of the hoops rather than from any story: above a sideboard, in a dining room, or in an office.
