A panorama of tightly packed vertical knife strokes – red, orange, gold, blue, white and black – reading like a burning city reflected in water: a large scarlet mass is at the upper left over a black patch, a red cluster at the upper centre-left, a pale-blue sky channel at the upper centre with white slabs, and a scarlet block at the centre.
Technique & Texture
Right of centre a row of poppy-red blooms lines up with a striking pink-magenta bar beneath them over a black band. This is a hand-painted painting on canvas – amber-gold vertical columns command the right third with orange masses and a black column at the right edge.
The Motif
A steel-blue band is at the left, white impasto blocks at the centre-left, and one cobalt vertical stroke drops at the lower centre; a black column is at the left edge, and streaks drip below the middle like reflections in water.
