Gift – two white flowers over a rust band
Wall art belts a grey field with one horizontal rust band and sets two large white flowers above it, their long stems crossing the band and running on to the bottom edge: painting on canvas in which that single horizontal is the axis the eye finds first. The heads have broad fleshy petals and a green core.
Technique and texture
The white is laid very thick and the knife has left flat facets on every petal. The centres are dark grey and pressed downward, so the petals rise above them. The rust band is the only densely granular passage on the canvas and behaves like cloth stitched across it.
The motif
The two heads are not a matched pair: the upper one is open and turned up, the lower one larger and tipped forward. White droplets are scattered over the whole surface and show most clearly against the rust. The stems are the only straight lines in an otherwise softly painted scene.
Setting and placement
Because that band sits horizontally, the piece settles naturally above a low chest or a bed. The grey around the flowers takes warm and cool lighting equally well.
