Flowers II – six poppies seen close
Wall art crowds six large heads into almost the full height of the canvas until they overlap and one is cut clean through by the top edge — modern painting that shows a piece of a field rather than the field. Three face upward on a yellow-green centre and three stand in profile, so only the inside of the petals is visible.
Technique and texture
The deposits here are heavier than in the wider version of the motif: the rim of every petal is raised into a ridge you could find with a fingertip. The white is dragged out from the centre in thin parallel threads, which is what makes the petals look crumpled and lit. Behind the motif the surface is first smoothed with a knife, then spattered, so it ends up misty and metallic.
The motif
The heads are offset into two irregular rows. The stems are thin and dark grey-green, and closed buds with a furred surface rise between them. Because the flowers are this large, the composition has no horizon and no depth beyond the overlap itself.

A close-up carries a small room, since the motif stays legible from two paces. It works in a bedroom or a dining room, where the grey ground calms the saturated red.
