Inner Fire – a white core in dark blue-green
Painting on canvas glows an ochre column and a white core out of a dark blue-green field while the lower third burns in deep red and brick: decorative painting lit, apparently, from inside itself.
Technique and texture
The upper field is built from thin vertically drawn layers that let the structure of the canvas show. The core is the opposite — white and cream are laid with the blade in thick tiles that stand above the surface and cast shadows. The ochre column runs from top to bottom and is rubbed back to the ground in places.
The motif
The bright core lies a little above the middle, which is what makes the canvas seem lit from within. The red below and the blue-green above never mix; they meet along a narrow, cut-up border. The vertical column ties the two zones together and gives them a shared axis, and toward the edges the red settles into brown.
Setting and placement
The contrast between a cold top and a burning foot is strong, so this one is best where it can be seen from a distance. In a room with timber and darker textiles the red at the bottom connects with its surroundings.
