Darkness with Gold – three layers and a golden edge of light
Three stacked horizontal layers: the upper forty-five percent is a smooth olive-grey field with soft knife traces, followed by a cracked silver-white band with black web-like veins, and the bottom is closed by a heavy, almost black layer.
Technique & Texture
The white band is a fragile, cracked crust, the olive field soft and warm, the black base dense and flat. This is a hand-painted painting on canvas – the cracks in the white band are real, formed as a thick layer dried.
The Motif
A gold-ochre ridge runs exactly along the upper edge of the white band, on the border between the olive field and the white – like a last light on a horizon. The golden mounds are heaviest right of centre and at the right edge; above the black base there is no gold, so the darkness remains darkness.
