Description

Grey and Gold – power and ornament side by side
A square composition of two characters: left of centre stands a large dark graphite mass, brushed vertically across nearly the full height, while the right third is taken by cracked white-plaster columns with leaf gold woven into them. Between them breathes a cream-beige plaster ground.
Technique & Texture
The graphite mass is darkest at the top centre and silvers along its left flank; its strokes run downward like a rain of soot. This is a hand-painted work of art – the gold and the white are not separate zones but one interwoven surface, in which the gold fills the cracks of the white.
The Motif
From the top edge three golden streams descend into the white field, and along the right side of the white columns a gold ribbon winds down to the lower sixth. At the very bottom the canvas is closed by a narrow beige strip – the ground on which both worlds stand.
Styling & Placement
A representative modern painting for living rooms, offices and reception areas; the graphite gives it gravity, the gold festivity. It works most beautifully on a calm, single-colour wall.
