Zala – white strokes on a bright field
Painting on canvas sweeps broad white and cream strokes across the whole surface and presses a nest of strong colour into the left third — abstract painting in the plainest sense, because nothing here resolves into a thing.
Technique and texture
The white strokes were laid with a very wide blade and have a smooth, almost polished face. The colour nest is their opposite — paint is heaped there in lumps that stand off the canvas and chip away at the edges. Between the two zones there is no drawn border, only the place where the white stops opening.
The motif
The composition is deliberately unbalanced: the weight is all in the left third and the other two thirds breathe. Red, dark blue, green and yellow overlap inside the nest while the surface elsewhere stays nearly empty. A few thin blue and brown traces run across the bright part like corrections, and the empty space counts as much as the colour rather than serving as a background.
Setting and placement
A pale, nearly white base will brighten a darker corner without any added lighting, which is a practical reason to choose it over a stronger picture. The square crop asks for a place of its own, with no other work beside it.
