Technique and texture
Each tile is stamped down with the edge of the blade and stays sharply bounded, with no mixing into its neighbour. The load is thick, so the surface catches light at different angles and changes with where the viewer stands. Thin dark gaps are left between the tiles and give the whole its depth.
The motif
Cream and white dominate, and red, rust and ochre fragments gather through the lower half. A few verticals reach higher than the rest and suggest towers. The red is distributed in clusters rather than evenly, so a look jumps from one to the next, and the upper third is the brightest passage and behaves like sky above the crowding.
Setting and placement
A very wide and low proportion covers the long strip above a bed or a sofa, which is the wall this shape exists for. On a quiet unpatterned wall the fine structure is what comes forward.
