Originals – records from a red-and-gold archaeology
A panoramic abstraction with the flavour of an archaeological find: blocks of red, golden ochre and amber carry systems of signs, as if the canvas kept messages of a vanished script. Each element is its own record, and the whole a collection of originals – hence the name.
Technique & Texture
The surface is layered and incised: across the lower right, webs of scratched lines and notches interweave. This is a hand-painted painting on canvas – every incision and every calligraphic stroke is made once, without correction.
The Motif
At the upper left circles a golden spiral disc with a dark ring; right of centre stands a dark bordeaux rectangle covered in cream calligraphic scribbles – the painting’s message. At the lower left of centre lies a pink-red rectangle with vertical white stripes, at mid-height left a green-yellow textured block, and along the far right edge a white combed stripe closes the wide ochre-amber fields.

Let the red and gold blocks take up about two thirds of the furniture width: 130 x 67 or 140 x 73 cm over a 200 cm sofa, 110 x 57 or 120 x 60 cm over a bed 160–180 cm wide, 150 x 75 cm over a 220 cm dining table, and 160 x 83 or 180 x 90 cm along a long hallway. The first photograph shows Originals head-on on a wooden studio easel in an optional light frame, and the second photograph shows the same canvas at an angle, where the incised lines catch the light.
