Description
Poppy and Poppy – red poppies on concrete grey
Wall art musters a stand of red poppies across a panoramic canvas on thin dark stems rising from the lower edge — painting on canvas whose entire colour story is the meeting of a cold grey and a dense red.
Technique and texture
The petals are painted in thick flat loads of red that lift above the surface at their edges. The centres are dark, nearly black, with single gold-ochre dots in them. Each stem is pulled in one thin stroke, slightly curved and each in its own direction. The grey ground went on in several layers and was then rubbed back, so lighter and darker patches appear across it.
The motif
The poppies are spread along an uneven row across the full width. Some are open and turned straight out; others are seen in profile or half closed. The heights alternate — the tallest reach almost to the upper edge and the lowest stay just above the bottom — which gives the row a wave.
Setting and placement
The row of heads reads left to right like a sentence, so it wants a wall you can walk the length of. The grey catches with concrete, oak and black metal, and the red is what stops the arrangement turning cold.
