Description
Red Flowers – four poppies inside a silver ornament
Wall art frames four red poppies with an ornament that closes round them on three sides, and stands them on thin dark stems against a red-orange ground that pales to creamy white at its centre: decorative painting in which the border is worked as hard as the flowers it holds.
Technique and texture
Thick kneaded impasto builds the poppies, so the petal edges lift clear of the canvas and throw their own shadows. The ground was laid in several layers and then sanded back in places, letting older, darker paint break through the red. Ornament is a different craft again — silver relief, polished to a metallic sheen that separates it plainly from anything brushed.
The motif
The heads are not matched in size: the middle one is largest and opens straight out, two are smaller and tilted, and the last on the right is the smallest of them. A dark rectangular panel with a pale lace pattern stands on the left and works like a window onto another texture. A silver cylinder lies in the lower right corner with a circle cut into its face.
Setting and placement
An ornamental frame needs quiet around it or it starts competing with the patterns in the room. A plain wall is where it works — living room, reception room or a dining room with darker furniture.
