Description
Transition – five gold tiles in a teal band
Wall art layers peach-orange over teal and turquoise and then over deep cobalt, and no boundary between them ever hardens into a line: modern painting that works as a window of colour rather than as a scene. Five gold-ochre squares are set into the teal band, and they are the one part of the canvas with a hard edge.
Technique and texture
The bands are thin overlapping layers that flow together while wet until the join disappears. The tiles are the opposite — laid thickly, edge kept sharp, so they stand above the plane of the colour field. White verticals and horizontals are scratched into the paint around them and hint at a grid.
The motif
The squares are not all the same size and not all at the same height: two sit lower, three higher, which takes the stiffness out of the row. Colour darkens steadily towards the bottom edge, closing in a narrow olive-green strip. Because nothing at all is drawn here, depth comes only from that darkening.
Setting and placement
A transition this quiet reads as a colour field, so it holds a narrower wall than most landscapes would. Bedroom, living room or office — anywhere a cool, ordered accent is wanted.
