Description
The video on this page (0:25) first shows the beginning: the architecture of the scene being drawn on the white canvas with a thin brush along a long stick, and then the finished hand-painted painting Nighthawks in a thin gold frame on a white wall in a room, filmed from several angles.
Nighthawks – Edward Hopper
Nighthawks is a painting by Edward Hopper from 1942: late at night, through a large plate-glass window, we see a corner diner where three customers sit and a man in white works behind the counter. We paint our hand-painted study of Nighthawks to order on canvas, in oil or acrylic, in 11 sizes from 40 × 70 cm to 120 × 220 cm or in a custom size. Before Nighthawks is dispatched, we send you a photo of the finished painting.
What does Nighthawks show?
In Nighthawks everything outside is empty and dark, and the greenish light from the diner falls on the pavement and lights a man and a woman at the counter, a lone customer with his back to us and the counterman in white. There is no door that leads out, and that very silence gives the painting its loneliness. The original Nighthawks is in the Art Institute of Chicago.
How is our hand-painted study of Nighthawks made?
Our painters paint the study of Nighthawks by hand, with brushstrokes of different thickness, separately for every order. We paint in oil or acrylic, depending on the subject and the size, so the surface of Nighthawks has a real paint texture that a print does not have. The first photograph shows our finished study of Nighthawks hanging in a gold frame on a wall, taken from the side next to other paintings, and the second shows it head-on on the white wall of a room. When Nighthawks is finished, we photograph it and send you the photo for approval.
Which size of Nighthawks suits your room?
For the wall above a sofa or a sideboard choose Nighthawks in 60 × 110 cm, and for a bedroom, hallway or work corner 40 × 70 cm. Nighthawks is available in 40 × 70 cm, 46 × 84 cm, 50 × 90 cm, 60 × 110 cm, 70 × 130 cm, 80 × 145 cm, 84 × 152 cm, 90 × 165 cm, 100 × 180 cm, 110 × 200 cm and 120 × 220 cm. A simple rule for Nighthawks: it should be about two thirds as wide as the furniture below it, with its centre about 150 cm from the floor.
How does Nighthawks arrive, and when?
We ship Nighthawks rolled in a sturdy tube, stretched on 2.5 cm deep wooden stretcher bars, or framed – you choose when you order. Stretching and framing of Nighthawks are done in our workshop in Slovenia. The 46 × 84 cm size of Nighthawks is in stock and reaches you within 6 working days; in the other sizes we paint the study of Nighthawks to order and you receive it in 15 to 45 days.
Frequently asked questions about Nighthawks
Is Nighthawks a print?
No. Every brushstroke of Nighthawks is painted by hand on canvas, so the paint visibly stands up from the surface.
Can I order Nighthawks in a size that is not listed?
Yes. We also paint Nighthawks in a custom size; enter the width and height you want when you order Nighthawks.
What does the title Nighthawks mean?
Nighthawks are night owls, people who stay up late into the night. In Nighthawks they are the customers in the diner while the city is already asleep.
Is Nighthawks a good gift?
Nighthawks is a gift for a lover of Hopper, of the city at night or of cinematic, storytelling scenes. If you are unsure which size of Nighthawks to choose, give a gift voucher.
