Hand-painted paintings on canvas: introducing the svetslik.si online gallery

svetslik.si is a Slovenian online gallery of hand-painted paintings on canvas. Every work is painted by a painter in oil or acrylic, never printed. The catalogue holds more than 1,800 paintings: reproductions of famous painters, modern and abstract compositions, and works by Slovenian artists. Prices start at 108 EUR, any painting can be ordered in a custom size, and before dispatch the buyer receives a photo to approve. The gallery operates in six languages and delivers to six European countries.

Today it is easier than ever to buy something online that looks like a work of art. The vast majority of what is sold as a painting on canvas is in fact a print — a digital reproduction stretched over a frame. The difference shows the moment you step closer: a print is smooth, even, with no trace of a hand. Real art paintings on canvas have texture, layers of paint and brushstrokes that behave differently under light than a flat surface does.

Edvard Munch, The Scream – a motif we hand-paint on canvas: a figure on a bridge clutches its face, an orange-red streaked sky above the fjord, two figures in the background on the left.
Munch’s The Scream is one of the most sought-after motifs in the catalogue. Each copy is painted individually, so no two copies ever match down to the last brushstroke.

This very difference is the starting point of the Slovenian online gallery svetslik.si, which has sold only hand-painted paintings since 2009. No prints, no giclée prints, no digital copies — every canvas is painted by a painter, in oil or acrylic.

Why a hand-painted painting and not a print

In an online shop photo, a print and a painted canvas are often impossible to tell apart. In a room, the difference is immediate. Oil paint has thickness; along the edges of the brushstrokes tiny shadows form, and they shift through the day with the light in the room. A printed surface does none of this — it looks the same in any light.

The second difference is durability. An oil painting on canvas is made from materials tested over centuries: linen canvas, a glue-based ground and pigment bound in oil. A print depends on the ink and the substrate it is applied to, and it fades faster in direct light.

The third difference is less technical, but in practice it is the most common reason to buy: an art painting that someone has painted is one of a kind. Even when the motif is famous, the copy is not identical to any other copy of the same motif.

What is svetslik.si

svetslik.si is an online gallery run by Matemero d.o.o., Zgornje Bitnje 146a, 4209 Žabnica, in the municipality of Kranj. The gallery has been online since 2009, while its painting activity dates back to 2007.

Today the catalogue comprises more than 1,800 paintings in Slovenian, plus frames, stretcher bar frames and accessories. The range is divided into hand-painted reproductions of famous painters, studies of paintings by famous painters, modern and abstract art paintings, themed collections and works by contemporary Slovenian painters.

Painting prices start at 108 EUR and rise with the motif, the size and the number of panels. The gallery operates in six languages and delivers to six countries.

How a painting is made

From motif to canvas

The process begins with choosing the motif and the size. Once the order is confirmed, the painter stretches the canvas on a stretcher bar frame and starts building the painting in layers. Oil dries slowly, so a day or two passes between coats; it is precisely this waiting that gives the surface a depth a print does not have. Every painting reproduction is therefore an independent work, not a printout of a file.

Because the painting is made by hand, copies of the same motif differ from one another. This is not a flaw but a consequence of the process — and the only honest description of what the buyer receives.

The materials are the same for every work: cotton or linen canvas stretched on a wooden stretcher bar frame, and paint applied in several layers. The standard version is oil on canvas; for some modern motifs the painters use acrylic, which dries faster and allows sharper edges. The painting ships stretched on its stretcher bar frame and ready to hang, with or without a frame.

Approval before dispatch

Before a painting sets off, the buyer receives a photo of the finished work. If they want a correction — a different shade, more emphasis on a detail — the painting is adjusted and only dispatched once they approve it. This step is why artworks on canvas from this gallery rarely need to be returned.

The range by category and painter

Reproductions and studies

The largest part of the catalogue consists of hand-painted copies of works by famous painters. The shelves are arranged by artist: Gustav Klimt, Claude Monet, Edvard Munch, Vincent van Gogh, Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, Henri Rousseau, Amedeo Modigliani, Joan Miró, Egon Schiele and others. Each painter has anywhere from a few to more than eighty works available.

Claude Monet – Impression, Sunrise – hand-painted reproduction, art painting on canvas

Claude Monet – The Water Lily Pond (Japanese Bridge) – hand-painted reproduction, art painting on canvas
The Water Lily Pond with the Japanese bridge — a motif Monet painted in dozens of versions.
Henri Rousseau, Scouts Attacked by a Tiger, 1904 – a tiger leaps at a scout in a white uniform, a horse rears, a pale moon above black palms, wall painting
Rousseau’s jungle — a dense, flat world of plants the painter never saw in nature.
Salvador Dalí – The Persistence of Memory – soft watches in a barren landscape, hand-painted reproduction of a famous painter on canvas
Dalí’s soft watches — a painting study executed in oil on canvas.
Amedeo Modigliani – Portrait of Jeanne Hébuterne III – elongated face and neck, reproduction of a famous painter, modern wall painting
Modigliani’s portrait of Jeanne Hébuterne — the elongated neck and narrow face are recognisable even from a distance.

Modern, abstract and themed paintings

Besides reproductions, the gallery offers an extensive collection of modern and abstract works created as original compositions. There are single-panel and multi-panel paintings on canvas, as well as themed paintings — children’s paintings, energy paintings and religious paintings. Anyone looking for wall paintings on canvas for a particular room usually starts here.

Multi-panel arrangements are especially common above sofas and in offices, where the wall is wide and a single format loses its proportion. For these orders the wall painting is divided into two, three or more pieces, which are painted as one composition rather than as separate works.

Joan Miró – Harlequin's Carnival – a lively colourful composition with small figures, hand-painted painting, oil on canvas
Miró’s Harlequin’s Carnival — a colourful, lively motif that holds up well in large formats.
Gustav Klimt – Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I – golden ornaments around a woman's portrait, hand-painted painting on canvas
Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I — the most ornamental Klimt canvas in the range.

Slovenian painters

A separate part of the catalogue belongs to contemporary Slovenian artists and is gathered under original artist paintings. Among them are motifs of Slovenian towns — Kranj, Ljubljana and places in Upper Carniola — as well as landscapes and portraits. The range also includes older Slovenian motifs, from landscapes to genre scenes.

Kranj Old Town – hand-painted painting of the historic centre of Kranj on canvas

Custom sizes, frames in the 3D app and visualisation

Custom-size paintings

Every work in the catalogue can be ordered in a size other than the default. The price for each size is shown on the product page, with no need to request a quote. The gallery also accepts orders based on a photo or entirely on the buyer’s own idea; more on this on the custom paintings on canvas page.

3D app: choosing a frame

The product page offers an online 3D app for choosing a frame. The app draws the selected frame around the painting in real time and lets you compare more than sixty profiles — widths, colours and finishes. The app shows the frame, not the room. Anyone who needs a custom picture frame can also order one outside the standard profiles.

Visualisation: a separate service

Placing a painting on your wall is a separate service and not part of the 3D app. The buyer sends a photo of their room to info@svetslik.si, and the gallery prepares a free preview of the chosen painting on their wall, in several sizes if needed, to make choosing the size easier. The process is described on the painting placement in your room page.

Delivery, returns and languages

The gallery delivers to Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Austria, Hungary and Germany. Paintings in stock are dispatched within 6 working days of order confirmation. Works painted to order in the standard catalogue sizes are completed in 15 to 45 working days; for non-standard sizes the lead time is agreed individually. The details are collected in the delivery policy, and the terms for returns and refunds are published separately.

If you would like to see a painting in a room first, browse the Inspiration Rooms or the photos of painted paintings; painting rental and a gift voucher are also available. The online shop operates in six languages: Slovenian, English, German, Italian, Hungarian and Croatian. More about the svetslik.si gallery is gathered on the about page.
