The Gestural Dance painting is a grid of four canvases in two rows of two, in 15 sizes, and every size in the menu is the whole set, width first; one canvas is half as wide and half as tall as the total. 40 x 55 cm and 50 x 69 cm suit a hallway or the wall above a desk, and beside the stairs, 60 x 83 cm fits a narrow wall. Above a 105 cm chest of drawers, choose 70 x 97 cm, about two thirds of its width. From 130 x 181 cm up, the four canvases need a stairwell or a high open wall, such as an open-plan living room.
The first photograph shows all four canvases above a grey sofa in light-wood frames, which are for illustration only, and the second photograph the top-left panel close up. Each panel arrives unframed in 15–45 days on a wooden stretcher, included in the price. The black strokes are hand-painted, not printed.
Why does Gestural Dance bring a wall to life?
Gestural Dance is made of black brushstrokes, thin lines and grey layers on a pale ground, spread across four canvases in a two-by-two grid. The strokes read like dance or calligraphy, which gives the wall movement and rhythm without filling it with colour. Being black and white, it goes with almost any interior, from pale Scandinavian to an industrial look with metal and concrete. The upright set belongs above a chest of drawers, beside a staircase, on a narrow living-room wall or in an office, and the gaps between the canvases lighten the wall.
How are the four canvases painted?
Gestural Dance is hand-painted by our painters on four canvases as a single composition. Broad black strokes, thin lines and grey layers run across the joins, so the movement carries on from one canvas to the next. The first photograph shows all four canvases above a light grey sofa, and the second the top-left panel close up, with the black column and the slanting stroke, where you can see the trace of the brush that no print has. Because every gesture is made by hand, each set comes out a little different. Before we pack the four canvases, we send you a photograph of the finished set to approve.
Stretched and unframed, or framed canvases?
The price of Gestural Dance includes the wooden stretchers: all four canvases are stretched in our workshop in Slovenia and arrive ready to hang. The four-panel Gestural Dance always ships stretched and unframed; if you like, we frame each canvas separately when you order. The slim wooden frames in the first photograph are for illustration only; unframed, the black strokes run to the edges of the canvases.
How do I hang a four-panel painting?
Mark the shared centre of the set at about 150 cm from the floor; above a chest of drawers or a sofa, keep the bottom edge 20 to 30 cm over the top or back. Hang the canvases with even, narrow gaps of a few centimetres in both directions, the top pair first and then the bottom pair. A spirit level and a paper template on the wall make it easier. A dry soft brush is all the care it needs, without water or cleaners.
