Description
Studio – brushes in an orbit of ellipses
Wall art orbits a run of thin black ellipses around three long shapes with olive tips, laid one below another like brushes set down after work — abstract painting whose subject is the moment the tools are put aside. A horizontal gold relief crosses the top edge.
Technique and texture
Underneath, the paint is painted smooth and thin with no texture at all; the whole relief budget is spent on the separate elements. The gold bands are laid thick by contrast and pressed while soft with wavy and spiral marks. The black ellipses are drawn with a narrow brush in one pass, so they are uneven and visibly done by hand.
The motif
The ellipses are not concentric but slightly offset from one another, which is what produces the sense of turning. The long shapes pierce them horizontally and extend beyond the ring on both sides. Two gold rectangular panels sit along the bottom edge, the left one pressed with vertical marks, the right with spirals.
Setting and placement
With this much empty ground the piece is best where the wall is calm and light. It belongs in a study, a studio or a small office — a room where the work is thinking.
