Thought IV – white falling over charcoal and red
Wall art drops white beads and strokes down a charcoal ground that is cut vertically by bands of saturated red, and lays one long horizontal white stroke across the middle in a single sweep: modern painting whose weight sits in the contrast rather than in any shape.
Technique and texture
Flat blocks with cut edges are set down one beside the next, and the dark underneath stays visible between them like a crack. The white was thrown from a height, so each drop burst on landing and spread into an irregular patch. The red bands were pulled downward and then partly covered with grey, which makes them glow out of the depth instead of off the surface.
The motif
The horizontal stroke is not straight — it lifts and thins toward the right, where the brush had almost run out. The red bands are unevenly placed, three of them crowded on the right and two drawn thin on the left. There is no focal point at all: what holds the canvas is the cold grey against the warm red.
Setting and placement
A ground this dark wants a pale wall or plenty of light, or the relief flattens out. The contrast is strong enough to hold a foyer or an open-plan office, and it loses nothing seen from the far end of a long room.
