Party – glasses in a vertical file
Painting on canvas tiers elongated figures one above another up the whole height of a narrow canvas and puts a glass in every hand — decorative painting with the rhythm of a tower rather than of a scene.
Technique and texture
The figures are painted flat, in smooth colour fields with no modelling, and bounded by an even black contour. The ground is the opposite: dense orange coils run across a blue-green base, applied with a fine tip. The streams of wine are pulled in one unbroken stroke from the top down into the glass below.
The motif
The figures are stretched in height and have small heads, so the file reads as a tower. The faces are caricatured — large eyes, small mouths, emphasised cheekbones — and depict nobody in particular. A pair of hands reaches in from above and pours, and what they pour becomes the one unbroken line joining the top of the picture to its foot.
Setting and placement
On a tall tight wall the upright beat of the figures is the point — in a dining corner, beside a door frame, in a narrow passage. The blue-green ground connects it with cooler furniture.
