Description
African Madonna – three figures under small parasols
Painting on canvas gathers three tall simplified figures into a line under small parasols, each held at a different angle so the repeated shape never becomes a pattern — modern painting that gets its rhythm from three variations on one form. The dresses are conical and smooth, two carmine and one orange, and the heads are reduced to small dark ovals.
Technique and texture
The field behind is built from a thick, irregularly dragged deposit in which knife marks and fine cracks stay visible. The dresses carry no modelling whatever and read as shapes cut from paper and laid down. The parasols and legs are made with a single thin pass of the brush.
The motif
The figures are the same height but turned differently. The legs are thin and straight and stop without feet, so the figures seem barely to touch the ground. A deep red band runs along the bottom and sets the scene on something solid.
