Description

City at Night – amber lights in grey rain
Painting on canvas lights a night city almost entirely in grey, black and white and lets small amber and orange windows come on among the towers — modern painting where every colour in the picture arrives through a window.
Technique and texture
The whole architecture is built with the blade: each facade is a few straight flat strokes, and the windows are single square impressions of white and amber. The sky is swept in broad diagonal passes of grey and black. In the foreground the strokes are pulled vertically downward, which is what makes the asphalt read as wet.
The motif
Dark towers stand at the left and the right and frame the scene. A group of tall buildings fills the middle, among them a narrow spire that reaches highest of all. Lamp standards wind between the houses carrying white lights. The lower third is open street, and the light spreads across it in long gold and orange bars.
Setting and placement
A wide, dark picture will carry a large wall in a living room, an office or a meeting room. The palette is close to monochrome and therefore agrees with almost any existing furniture, while the amber windows supply the warmth.
