Description
Distance 2 – a blue-green arc over ochre
Painting on canvas arches a wide blue-green band up from the left and down again beneath an ochre stripe on the right: wall art in which the whole drawing is one long curve and the rest is weather around it.
Technique and texture
A broad brush laid the colour in straight passes that do not blend but cover one another. The edges of the planes are soft and smeared, and only a few places are drawn in with a thin dark line. The sphere is the one smooth, almost polished surface on the canvas.
The motif
The composition is built from horizontal bands, cut in two low down by a pale upright form. That form has two outstretched limbs and reads as a small figure among large fields. A small red-brown sphere with a white highlight sits still at the centre, and the colours repeat in pairs so a look moves from one side to the other and back.
Setting and placement
Muted tones broken with grey mean this one stays calm even on a coloured wall, which is not true of most pictures with a curve this size in them. The square crop works paired with another square, or alone above a table.
