In Space VI – a copper mechanism in a cold field
Painting on canvas plants a copper-gold mass that looks machined into a cool green-grey field, and builds it from rows of raised hemispheres, combed fans and a dark ring set left of centre — modern painting whose thickest paint is all gathered into that one object.
Technique and texture
The mass carries the deepest layer on the canvas: the hemispheres were pressed into paint that was still soft, and the fans were dragged with a comb into parallel furrows. Around it the field is the opposite — thin translucent films that run down into drips along the bottom edge. White spatters lie over everything else, put there after all the rest had been settled.
The motif
The dark ring is the only fully regular shape here, which is why the eye goes to it before anything else. The rows of hemispheres thin out to the right and lose themselves in the field, so the mass never resolves into a finished edge. A saturated red plane opens below it, shifted left rather than squared to it, and that misalignment keeps the whole thing off balance.
Setting and placement
Concrete, metal and dark wood are the natural neighbours for something this industrial. Give it space enough to be read as an object rather than as a window; hung tight between a door and a bookcase, it stops being one.
