In Space VII – three panels and a copper tube
Painting on canvas segments the surface into three upright panels with nothing in common but their edges — rough dark reddish brown on the left, smooth light cream in the middle, a moulded floral relief on the right: decorative painting, three panels and three separate crafts. Three round and oval forms float on the middle one, linked by a copper tube.
Technique and texture
The middle panel was laid thin and then smoothed flat, so it can act as a still ground for what sits on it. Every form is outlined with a raised cord of paint that rings it like a metal bezel and lifts it off the plane. The ornament on the right was pressed into soft paint with a mould, while the left panel was beaten rough and never smoothed at all.
The motif
The highest form is a long oval; beneath it a round plane stands on a vertical copper foot, and the smallest lies away to their left. The tube does not run through them in order — it skips the middle form entirely, which makes the arrangement read as apparatus rather than decoration. All three are filled with copper and brown texture that differs from the panel below them in height as much as in colour.
Setting and placement
The three-part structure supplies its own order, so this one survives a wall that already has things on it. It works in a dining room, a study, or a living room where somebody will stand close enough to find the detail.
