Calla Lilies II – White Callas on a Silver-Gold Ground
An elegant floral still life: two white calla lilies on tall dark wiry stems stand before a heavily textured silver-gold ground. The upper, larger one opens its trumpet-shaped bloom downward to the left, revealing an orange-red spadix; the lower, smaller one, left of centre, opens to the left with its spadix pointing upward.
Technique & Texture
The ground is laid on like plaster: silver-white and grey masses with ochre-gold patches, while the right third carries a dense lace-like relief of silver over dark. It is a hand-painted artistic painting – the angular, paper-white petals are shaded with greys no print can reproduce.
The Motif
The stems wind and cross, accompanied at their base by thin blades of grass, while between them at the bottom rests a small gold block. The lower band is darker, with root-like scratches – the callas grow from earth, not from emptiness.
